Principal contractors

A Principal Contractor is defined under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (s293) as:

  1. The principal contractor for building and construction work conducts a business or commissions building and construction work.
  2. If the principal contractor for the building and construction work discharges their duties and authorises management or control of the workplace to someone else, that person is now the principal contractor.
  3. If the owner of residential premises is an individual who directly or indirectly engages a person conducting a business or undertaking building and construction work in relation to the premises, the person engaged is the principal contractor.

Please note a construction project has one principal contractor at any specific time.
