Principal contractors
A Principal Contractor is defined under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (s293) as:
- The principal contractor for building and construction work conducts a business or commissions building and construction work.
- If the principal contractor for the building and construction work discharges their duties and authorises management or control of the workplace to someone else, that person is now the principal contractor.
- If the owner of residential premises is an individual who directly or indirectly engages a person conducting a business or undertaking building and construction work in relation to the premises, the person engaged is the principal contractor.
Please note a construction project has one principal contractor at any specific time.
